slackel screenshotsAfter three years Slackel is back again with a new version.
I have stopped developing slackel for a lot of reasons as :
* There was no interesting from Greek users.
* It is not fun and boring to spent time developing a distro by your own.
* New version of kde 4 was not as i like it. It was in beta stage.
So i was using Slackel 3.3 updated to kde 3.5.10, when i discovered a new distribution which is 100% slackware compatible and also has a very helpful and nice develop team. It is Salixos Distribution.
http://www.salixos.orgSo i installed the salix-xfce edition in a desktop pc and i liked it very much. It has very user friendly tools to manage the desktop, create new users, a very good installer, notification manager for new updates, nice collection of useful applications and more. You can read more about Salixos team here
http://www.salixos.org/wiki/index.php/Salix_OS:TeamI joined the Salix forum and started to make packages for salix to give something back to the salixos users as a returning for their nice distro.
Then when a new edition of slackware 13.1, came up, i installed it in a vbox. To my surprise i saw that kde 4.4.3 was very stable and well looking. And i make a decision to make a new slackel kde.
Salixos had no KDE edition so i made a beta salix kde installation cd and i wrote an announcement to salix forums. And with the help of salix team and the use of salixtools for managing the system, salix-live-installer, salix-clone etc Salix KDE editions came up.
http://www.salixos.org/wiki/index.php?title=DownloadSo, Slackel-13.1.2 came up also. The difference between Slackel and Salix-kde-int edition is in the background, a few programs added, default greek installation, removed the foreign langs.
Slackel will be the base for the Slackel DVD livecd edition with educational, graphics, games etc apps for greek users.
Slackel KDE livecd includes the elegant KDE 4.4.3 accompanied by a very rich collection of KDE centric software, all in the size of a CD-ROM sized image. The Konqueror web browser, KMail and Ktorrent are the main networking applications included in this release, followed by Akregator, an RSS reader for KDE, Kopete, the KDE instant messenger, pidgin, xchat, gftp and more. Wicd is used for setting up your wired or wireless networking connections.
In the multimedia section, Slackel KDE livecd edition features Kaffeine, a gstreamer based media player, Clementine, a powerful yet very fast music player and music library organizer that is inspired by Amarok 1.4 and of course K3b, the best optical disc burning application for Linux systems. The Salix codecs installer application can be used to quickly and easily install patent encumbered codecs to your system.
A wide variety of office applications are included thanks to Koffice, the standard KDE office suite. KWord, KSpread and KPresenter are the main office applications present while there are many more included that will satisfy the needs for almost any task, like KOrganizer, KAddressBook and the Okular document viewer.
In the graphics section, Krita, a powerful image editor and Karbon, a scalable graphics editor are included, together with Gwenview, a feature-rich image viewer. Many more smaller tools like KColorChooser, a colour picker and KSnapshot, a screenshot capturing application supplement the graphics applications selection.
The graphical system tools ( from Salixos) are present in the KDE edition too, making administrative tasks easy for everyone. Package management, as always, is done using slapt-get and its graphical frontend Gslapt. Lilosetup, a tool to graphically configure the Lilo boot loader is included too, along with many more tools.
The Slackel KDE live image edition can be used to showcase the KDE system, but also to install it on your hard drive using the very easy to use Slackel Live Installer graphical application. ( taken from Salixos)
Persistence can be setup and used with the Live edition in an easy fashion, using a graphical application that helps you create a persistence file. LiveClone ( taken from Salixos also) is another very important feature of Slackel KDE Live as it lets the user create a custom KDE live image, that will include all changes that the user has done during his live session. The custom live images that are created in this way can be used just like the official live image and the Slackel Live Installer works with those custom images too, so this is really the easiest way for everyone to create his own custom live distribution using KDE.
Enjoy Slackel live KDE edition
