I just had for one week no Internet connection and found that "mc" does not
open at all without such a connection. Typing "mc" in terminal it will just sit
forever with no indication what is happening.

edit /etc/hosts
be sure to have these lines
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 slackel.example.net slackel

replace slackel.example.net with your hostname.hostdomain and reboot if you have persistent enabled.

also maybe will also be this
edit /etc/resolv.conf and be sure to not exist a line beginning with "search"

But you run the live iso which means that if you do not use a usb installation with persistent changes will not be permanent.
There is no problem here with or without internet connection and mc.
