Installing on xfs Partition

Post by atipp »

I tried to install slackel64-kde-4.14.18 on a partion that
was formatted as xfs of a previous distro.

When installer asked to format qick I used that.
The formatting went on and on and on and finally it said it will put
"/dev/sda7 / xfs" into fstab even so I had specified to
format to ext4.

I aborted and tried again with the same result and I proceeded
with the installation. That one could not boot giving lots of errors.

I then formatted that partition /dev/sda7 to ext4 with gparted
and the installer did then run correctly. Slackel64-kde-4.14.18
is installed und works beautifully.

Why that hickup of the installer on a formatted xfs partition?

NOTE: if you choose grub then the partition cannot be in xfs filesystem because system will not boot after installation, as grub does not support xfs properly. If you want to use xfs as your filesystem you must also use the eLilo boot loader.
It is mentioned in openbox announcement.
I also added this note in kde announcement.
Also always format with gparted a partition in live iso or cgdisk in installation iso a partition in which a previous distro was installed.
Be sure the partition it is not mounted before format it. Even if installer will do it, is better to be sure that it is clean.
When live iso boot then mounts the partitions found in the system. Or maybe the partition was too big in size and took long time to be formatted. I improved the installer to umount for sure the partition before formatted.
